Sensor Technology Ltd ~ What Are TorqSense Rotary Torque Transducers?

Rotary torque is historically a difficult and expensive level to measure because traditional techniques are invasive to the mechanical systems being measured. But Sensor Technology by using existing technology in a novel way have developed inexpensive transducers which can be produced for situations where monitoring or control of drive mechanisms is required.

The patented method uses Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices as essentially 'frequency dependent' strain gauges to measure the change in resonant frequency caused by an applied shaft strain. This technology has been trademarked 'TorqSense'.

In particular, SAW technology opens up new application areas where knowledge of torque is critical. Instrumentation versions feature enhanced accuracy and resolution to better than one part in a million. It is therefore envisaged that the TorqSense technology will replace existing types of rotary torque transducers by providing better performance at a more cost sensitive price.
